Poor communication among anesthesia providers, surgeons, nurse anesthetists, and other surgical staff may exist during the perioperative period. One factor may be that the perspectives of these members of the surgical team may differ. Preoperatively, anesthesiologists and surgeons often determine surgical strategy separately, necessitating improved communication to align surgical plans. Studies have shown that certain tactics, including use of aviation techniques, documentation and/or notes derived from a template, and formalized processes may improve communication and are aimed at ensuring teams function well together.
