Hospital antibiotic usage was associated with increased antibiotic susceptibility, rather than decreased susceptibility, for many organisms, according to a recent Canadian study.
“These findings appear at first c ounterintuitive, where we believe antibiotics to be one of the major factors governing selection of antibiotic resistance,” said Derek R. MacFadden, MD, of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Toronto, and one of the researchers.
