Studies Expose High Rates of Sexual Harassment in Surgery

Some See Reports as Possible Turning Point; Others Concerned About Lack of Action

An “alarming” number of surgeons and surgical trainees—as many as two-thirds of women and one-fourth of men in one study—experienced sexual harassment at work in the past 12 months, researchers reported at the 2019 annual meeting of the Academic Surgical Congress, held in Houston.

The findings don’t just come from one paper but from three presented at this year’s meeting. They showed sexual harassment throughout academic surgery, although
