Preparing for the Uptick in Transgender Patients And Gender-Affirming Procedures

Nashville, Tenn.—In the summer of 2017, Kim M. Hughes, RN, CNOR, scrubbed in for a chest reconstruction surgery. The patient, Morgan—a 17-year-old transgender boy—was undergoing a bilateral mastectomy with nipple skin grafting.

The procedure marked a first for Ms. Hughes and for Boston Children’s Hospital.

“I had never taken care of a transgender youth before, and I had so many questions,” Ms. Hughes said.
