Contralateral Risk For DCIS Patients Very Low

Study Quantifies Risks, Argues Against Prophylactic Mastectomy

Las Vegas—The rate of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy in women with ductal carcinoma in situ more than doubled in the past decade, but new research shows their risk for contralateral breast cancer is too low to justify that preventive option.

“Many patients overestimate their risk of local recurrence and contralateral breast cancer,” said Megan Miller, MD, a breast surgical oncology fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York City.
