Supine MRI May Significantly Decrease Positive Margin Rates, Improve Precision for Breast Surgery

By Monica J. Smith

The use of supine MRI to guide breast-conserving surgery in breast cancer treatment is resource-intensive, but it appears to significantly decrease positive margin rates and allow for a more precise surgery than wire localization, according to new research.

Despite best practices, 15% to 20% of lumpectomies yield positive margins that require further surgery.
