Defying conventional reasoning, a review by one institution of skiers and snowboarders found that helmet users were more likely to have a higher injury severity score and more intracranial bleeds than those who did not wear helmets (J Trauma Acute Care Surg 2019;87[5]:1205-1213).
“We were surprised by these findings. As we looked deeper at the data, we found that helmeted patients were more likely to have a higher-energy mechanism of injury. They were hitting stationary
