Study of Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision Finds Decline in Key Functional Outcomes

A study of functional outcomes after transanal total mesorectal excision in patients with low rectal tumors, presented at the 2024 annual meeting of the American Surgical Association, has found that a decline in defecatory continence and sexual function are consistent outcomes.

The findings add to a body of evidence demonstrating the functional consequences of rectal cancer surgery, which have serious implications for patient quality of life and mental health after rectal cancer
