When I entered medical school over 50 years ago (gulp!), there was a big push among educators to add the “humanities” to the medical school curriculum. There was a simultaneous push to add “ethics” to the law school curriculum. So presumably the general perception was that lawyers lacked ethics and doctors lacked the human skills necessary to care for sick people.
