C. difficile Management Strategy Pays Off

Targeted screening, curbs on fluoroquines cut CDI rates in half

Orlando, Fla.—In early 2016, the University of Wisconsin (UW) Health, in Madison, had the unenviable distinction of being in the bottom sixth percentile of U.S. hospitals in its incidence of Clostridium difficile infections (CDIs), with the number of observed infections “far exceeding” the number of predicted infections.

To stem these rates, antimicrobial stewardship teams that included pharmacists rolled out a battery of measures, ranging from re- designed CDI
