Most GERD Patients Refractory to PPIs Improve With Surgery, If GERD Is Real

Nissen fundoplication is “significantly superior” to medical therapy for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease whose heartburn fails to improve with proton pump inhibitors, according to a new multicenter trial from the Veterans Administration.

Previous reports show that up to 40% of patients with GERD symptoms do not obtain adequate control from PPIs, which are regarded as the first-line medical treatment for the condition. For the majority of these patients,
