Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) prevention protocols have focused on treating the infection and, more recently, minimizing the risk for recurrence. Future management strategies will concentrate on preventing CDI, particularly using vaccine or antibiotic neutralizing strategies. This review summarizes the main therapeutic options for treating CDI, and then discusses the pipeline preventive strategies for this common and problematic infection.
